Ireland - West Coast - Killaloe

There are a surprising number of ancient artifacts on display at St Flannan's Cathedral. The Ogham Stone (left) has an old Gaelic form of writing often found on standing stones. This one is dated at 1000AD. It also bears an inscription in Runes, a Scandanavian script, which indicates it may have been carved by a Viking who was converted to Christianity. The 4m high 12th century High Cross (right) was brought to Killaloe from Northwest Clare in 1821 by Bishop Mant, an amateur archaeologist.
